I have written and rewritten this post a number of times but I think it's time to finally announce it publicly: as of September 24th, the Saskatoon Ukulele Players are no more. We've had a great 7 years. Sure, there have been ups and downs as there are in any group but things have gotten particularly bad recently.
It's difficult for me to talk about this publicly because of the amount of misinformation regarding the current pandemic but as an immunocompromised person, it's been shocking how cold and cruel people have become. My background in microbiology has helped me and my family stay safe but my knowledge, experience, and ability to examine the most recent research in the field was constantly belittled. I asked for accommodations and was met with silence.
At the end of the day, it's unethical for me to continue to run a group that refuses to keep myself and others safe and the non-stop discussions with people were killing my soul so I made the difficult decision to close.
As I wrote to our members, if kind hearts and rational minds return to the world, I will reboot our little club and I mean it. We've all become better musicians over the past several years and I would love to continue that journey one day.
